UND sweeps NCHC Monthly Awards

Adams (Player), Gaber (Rookie) and Scheel (Goalie) all earn March accolades

It was a complete sweep of National Collegiate Hockey Conference monthly awards for March for University of North Dakota athletes, the league announced Tuesday. Forward Collin Adams was the NCHC Player of the Month with Riese Gaber winning Rookie of the Month and Adam Scheel taking home Goalie of the Month accolades.

UND won every NCHC Player of the Month award this season, with four different players earning that distinction (December- Jordan Kawaguchi, January- Shane Pinto, February- Jasper Weatherby). Scheel won his third straight NCHC Goalie of the Month and was the national goalie of the month in February.

Adams tallied a conference-leading 11 points and was an NCHC-best +12 in March as North Dakota marched to the postseason. UND claimed its first-ever NCHC Frozen Faceoff title as Adams tallied seven points in the three wins and then added three more points in the two games in the NCAA Tournament. Adams enjoyed a career-best five-point night in the NCHC Tournament quarterfinal win over Miami. He then added a pair of assists in the championship game win over St. Cloud State.

The New York Islanders draft pick scored the first of UND’s dramatic extra-attacker goals late in the NCAA Midwest Regional final against Minnesota Duluth to set the stage for the historic five-overtime thriller.

He paced the league with five goals and six assists in March. Adams completed his senior season and will sign with the New York Islanders.

Gaber was the NCHC Frozen Faceoff’s Most Outstanding Player, guiding the Fighting Hawks to their first-ever NCHA Tournament championship.

The Gilbert Plains, Manitoba product scored three goals in the NCHC playoffs, including a pair of tallies in the championship win over St. Cloud State.  He added an assist in the win to give him four points in the Frozen Faceoff.

He paced all NCHC rookies with five points in March with three goals and two assists. Gaber had 19 shots on goal and added four blocked shots for the month.

Scheel started all five postseason games for North Dakota, winning four games before the NCAA Midwest Regional final. That game saw Scheel play 140:59 in net, stopping a career-high 51 shots before a fifth-overtime goal gave UMD the win.

Scheel finished the season with a 20-4-1 record and a 1.74 GAA. His career GAA set a new UND mark (1.95).

Following the season, the Lakewood, Ohio product signed a free agent deal with the Dallas Stars organization.
