NDSU Track and Field Qualifies 7 Entries for NCAA Indoor Championships

The NCAA announced the fields for the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships late Tuesday night, and North Dakota State will be sending the largest group of qualifiers in its Division I history.

The Bison had six athletes earn a total of seven entries to the NCAA Championships, all in the throwing events.

On the men’s side, Bison senior Alex Talley was the only athlete in the nation to qualify in both throwing events. He ranks third in the weight throw and tied for fifth in the shot put entering the national meet. Talley will be joined by senior Trevor Otterdahl in the weight throw, junior Kristoffer Thomsen in the shot put, and sophomore Maxwell Otterdahl in the shot put.

On the women’s side, junior Akealy Moton is the top-ranked Bison entering the meet at No. 3 in the NCAA in the shot put. Senior Amy Herrington also qualified at No. 15 in the weight throw.

This year’s NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 11-13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The weight throw is on Thursday, March 11, with the women’s competition beginning at 4:30 p.m. and the men at 6:30 p.m. The shot put will be contested on Friday, March 12, with the men and women both starting at 11 a.m.

The NCAA Indoor Championships are limited to the top 16 performers in the country in each individual event. The Bison nearly added an eighth entry, with senior Jennie Baragar-Petrash coming in at No. 19 on the final declaration list in the 3000m following scratches by other athletes.

Talley also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both events last season, and is now the first NDSU men’s track and field athlete to qualify for the Division I indoor meet in multiple events more than once.

Men’s Qualifiers (Athlete, event, rank): Alex Talley, weight throw, third, Alex Talley, shot put, tied for fifth, Trevor Otterdahl, weight throw, twelfth, Maxwell Otterdahl, shot put, twelfth, and Kristoffer Thomsen, shot put, fifteenth.

Women’s Qualifiers (Athlete, event, rank): Akealy Moton, shot put, third and Amy Herrington, weight throw, fifteenth.
