Coming off the high of captain Jack Westlund's game-winning goal Friday night, the Minot Minotauros continued their momentum in a 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Wilderness Saturday night.

Now riding a four-game winning streak, Minot drew first blood late in the first period on their first power play opportunity of the night thanks to a Mitchell Allard holding penalty.

Gabe Temple beat Minnesota netminder Jacob Zacharewicz for his fourth goal of the season. Kaiden Scott and Jay Buchholz assisted on the opening tally.

Westlund found the back of the net again just under five minutes into the second period, aided by Trevor Stachowiak, to double Minot's lead. The Wilderness found an answer 7:22 into the frame, as Cole Hansen potted his first goal of the season to halve the Minotauros' lead.

It appeared as though the score would remain 2-1 entering the final period, but Tyler Kostelecky emerged with some late heroics and scored his fifth goal of the year with only 21 seconds left. Brett Roloson and Cade Stibbe provided the assists.

Two more Minotauros goals were scored in the final period, by Damon Zimmer, his ninth of the year and assisted by Stachowiak, and Reid Bogenhom, his first of the campaign. The 5-1 win gave the Minotauros their thirteenth win of the year and pulled them closer to the second-place Bismarck Bobcats with 29 points.

Minot goaltender Keenan Rancier snagged his thirteenth win of the season as well, and lowered his goals-against average to 2.85.

Minot is scheduled to square off against the first-place Aberdeen Wings for a two-game set starting Feb. 19 at the Odde Ice Center. Puck drop is pegged for 7:15 p.m.

Minot State

sweeps Iowa State

The Minot State men's hockey team swept the Iowa State Cyclones in a two-game set in Ames, extending its win streak to seven straight.

On Friday, Jagger Thiessen got the Beavers on the scoreboard first in the first period, his second goal of the season. Justin Metcalf and Rhett Lough added goals in the second frame, their eighth and sixth goals, respectively, and Minot State led 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Freshman sensation Carter Barley sealed the win in the third period with his eleventh goal of the year, and his twenty-fourth point overall, a mark that leads the team.

On Saturday, Minot State again prevailed, this time by a 3-2 final tally. No goals were scored in the first period, but Blake Fournier landed the first blow for the Beavers in the second period, his fourth goal of the season. The Cyclones answered with a goal of their own, and the game was tied at one goal apiece in heading to the final period.

Iowa State proceeded to score its second straight goal, but an answer soon came from Dalton Dosko. The game went to overtime, and then a shootout. Goals from Nick Doyle and Fournier in the shootout gave Minot the series sweep.

The lady Beavers did not see such good fortune in their two-game set against Lindenwood University. The Lions took both games from Minot State, 3-1 and 3-2 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. On Saturday, the Beavers' lone score came from Ensley Fendelet, her second goal of the year. Ahlisha O'Hara and Kenzie Heide lit the lamp for Minot State on Sunday, but the two goals were not quite enough to earn the victory.

The Minot State men are scheduled to hit the ice again Feb. 19 on the road against Jamestown for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The women will play Midland University for the fifth time this year Feb. 26 at 5 p.m.
