Magi tops Bismarck 5-1; Tauros shut out by Bobcats on New Year’s Eve

On the final day of 2020, the Magicians boys hockey club recorded its fourth win in as many games as they defeated Bismarck High, 5-1. Meanwhile, the Minot Minotauros fell on the road to the Bismarck Bobcats 3-0.

The Magi took control of the contest early with a pair of goals in the first period. Senior defenseman Riley Opperude accounted for the first score of the game off assists by Zachary Diehl and Ben Svangstu at the 8:50 mark. Nearly six minutes later, senior forward Casey Fjeld added to the Minot lead with the help of an assist by Diehl.

In the third, Minot added a trio of goals to salt away a home victory at the Maysa Arena. Along with Diehl who notched a pair of assists, Opperude and Svangstu also recorded two points apiece with one goal and an assist on the afternoon. Three of Minot’s goals came via the power play.

With eight points on the season, MHS now occupies second place in the WDA West Region standings, trailing first place Jamestown who has 13 points on the year. Up next, Minot is scheduled to face seventh-place Dickinson (1-1-0-0) at home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

As for the Minotauros, they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat on New Year’s Eve, losing to the Bismarck Bobcats 3-0. Three of Minot’s last four loses have come at the hands of the Bobcats.

Minot has now lost six of eight games against Bismarck this year as its record falls to 8-7-2-1 on the season. Despite the losing skid, Minot currently sits in second place behind Aberdeen in the NAHL Central Division standings with 19 points thus far.

Up next for the Minotauros, they are scheduled for a two-game road series against the fifth place St. Cloud Norsemen (3-7-0-0) on Jan. 8 and 9.
