Lions take fourth in Bishop Ryan Wrestling Tournament

Cooper wins first place in 113-lb division

On Saturday afternoon, Bishop Ryan hosted an eight-team wrestling tournament, and came away with a fourth place finish, notching a team score of 95.

The Lions placed behind Velva (129), Carrington (158.5) and overall winner South Border, who earned a score of 173.

Among the individual highlights for Bishop Ryan, Lane Cooper (9-1) was the top performer for the Lions. At 113 pounds, Cooper won all three of his matches en route to a first place finish in his weight class while collecting 24 team points.

Cooper defeated Bryson Amyotte of Rugby by way of fall (1:38) in the quarterfinal round, then took a 5-2 decision over Justin Hudson of Northern Lights in the semifinals. In the finals, Cooper registered his second pin of the day, beating Connor Bosch of Beulah-Hazen in just 46 seconds.

At 145 pounds, Wesley Harvey (7-4) earned Bishop Ryan’s second highest individual point total with 19. Harvey defeated Triton Kaercher of Velva by way of fall (1:12) in the quarterfinals, and won against Jon Shockley of South Border with a major decision (15-4) in the semis. In the finals, Harvey had to settle for second place as he was beaten by way of a sudden victory at the hands of Brecken Lura of Carrington.

Bishop Ryan’s Octavio Alvarez (120), Drew Zwak (152) and Connor Harvey (160) each came in third place in their respective weight classes while combining for a total of 35 team points. While Alvarez topped Havlin Delong of Northern Lights in a 10-4 decision in his final match, Zwak earned third by virtue of his 7-0 decision over Jonathon Lura of Carrington. As for Harvey, he ended the tournament with a 4-0 decision over Trevin Sago of Beulah-Hazen.

Up next, the Lions are scheduled to compete in a road quadrangular with Velva, South Border and Kenmare on Friday, Jan. 15. The match will take place in Kenmare at 5 p.m.
