Former Magi football standout enjoys consecutive bowl victories

On Christmas Day, a Minot High School alumnus celebrated a bowl win with his team from the Mid-American Conference.

Scott Fuchs, an offensive line coach for the University of Buffalo, helped the Bulls to a 17-10 triumph over the Marshall Thundering Herd in the Cramton Bowl. The game itself was played in Montgomery, Alabama.

Finishing up the 2020 campaign with an overall record of 6-1, it was the second consecutive season in which Buffalo ended the year with a bowl win; a feat never before accomplished at the university. In 2019, the Bulls capped off its season with a 31-9 victory over Charlotte in the Bahamas Bowl.

Without the services of leading rusher Jaret Patterson, who was nursing injuries to his leg, the Bulls relied heavily on the exploits of junior halfback Kevin Marks. A bruising style of runner, Marks posted 138 yards on 35 carries and a touchdown to win the game’s most valuable player.

Aside from the contest itself, Fuchs shares that his club arrived in Montgomery two nights prior to the game on Dec. 23. On Christmas Eve, the former Magician student-athlete says his team was able to do some sightseeing during a two-day visit to the Alabama state capital.

“It was really fun to go on a historical tour of the town with the guys,” Fuchs tells The Minot Daily News. “We learned a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King and his important contributions to the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and the guys had a great time with that.”

In just his second year on the Bulls coaching staff, Fuchs explains Buffalo’s winning culture is the key reason for the success of the program. In particular Fuchs credits the leadership of head coach Lance Leipold as the driving force behind the club’s winning mentality.

“It’s not all about X’s and O’s with this team, we talk a lot about culture during most of our team meetings. It really is a wonderful experience to be around a group like this that really cares about the game, it’s been very fulfilling and rewarding for sure,” Fuchs adds. “We just want to roll this success into next season, and pick up where we left off in 2021.”
