MHS girls basketball win a pair at home

Boys earn road victory to start season

MDN File Photo Junior forward Mariah Evenson, seen here during a Minot practice session, has been a key contributor to a 2-0 start for the Majettes. After posting 21 points against Williston in the season opener, Evenson notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds against St. Mary's on Tuesday.

The Minot Majettes basketball squad is off to a 2-0 start.

After dispatching Williston at home easily to the tune of 99-33 on Monday, the Majettes followed up with another double-digit win over St. Mary’s on Tuesday, 63-35. In Minot’s latest win, it was Mariah Evenson leading the way offensively with game highs in both points (17) and rebounds (10). Avery Lunde and Taury Hight also reached double figures in scoring with 15 and 12 respectively for Minot.

Afterwards, MHS head coach Jason Schwars says he is pleased with his team’s offensive output and outside shooting early on. Against St. Mary’s, Minot converted on 23 of 46 attempts from the field, good for a shooting percentage of 50 percent. “It’s tough to start the season playing on back-to-back nights as you’re not in the best shape quite yet, but we were able to go deep into our bench and once again get contributions from a variety of different players,” Schwars tells the Minot Daily News.

Up next for the Majettes, they are scheduled to travel to Bismarck for their next contest against the Legacy Sabers on Friday evening. Meanwhile, the Minot boys basketball team is 1-0 on the young season following a 67-64 road victory over St. Mary’s on Dec. 15. In that game, the Magi shot 44.1 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from downtown. By comparison, St. Mary’s shot 40.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. The major disparity came on the glass as Minot collected 47 boards compared to 29 for St. Mary’s.

Deonte’ Martinez was the leading scoring for the Magi as he totaled 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Darik Dissette collected 17 points in the win, and Eric Wentz chipped in with 10 points of his own in the win. Following the game, MHS boys head coach Dean Winczewski alluded to his club’s success on the boards as a key component to the victory. However, the Minot coach also noted that ball security must improve as the season continues.

“We had a really nice stretch in the second half where we guarded the ball and rebounded very well. From that, we were able to build a 10-point lead, but we have to learn to play with a lead and take care of the ball because 19 turnovers is way too many,” Winczewski adds. “All things considered, it was a successful first game.”

Up next for the MHS boys, they are scheduled to host Bismarck Legacy on Friday. Tip-off for that game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
