Sabre Dogs walk-off again, defeat Big Sticks 4-3 in 10 innings

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Souris Valley starting pitcher Trevor Jackson throws a pitch during Saturday evening’s game against the Badlands Big Sticks at Corbett Field. The Sabre Dogs earned a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.

As the old saying goes, “history repeats itself.” Less than 24 hours removed from beating the Badlands Big Sticks in walk-off fashion, the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs claimed another 10-inning victory via a walk-off on Saturday evening.

In the second game of the four-game series, Mason Dinesen became the hero for Souris Valley (11-9). Dinesen’s RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Sabre Dogs a 4-3 victory over the Big Sticks (11-10.)

In order to help his team snatch first place away from its Lewis Division rival, Dinesen stuck to the basics.

“In those situations, I try to keep it real simple,” he said. “I just look to the middle of the field and try to do my job, especially right there.”

Before Dinesen came through in the clutch, Souris Valley starting pitcher Trevor Jackson dominated the Badlands lineup. Jackson held a no-hitter through five innings and allowed just two hits and two walks in his eight-inning start.

After settling into an early rhythm, the Sabre Dogs hurler finished with eight strikeouts.

“Today, I just wanted to get ahead with my fastball,” Jackson said. “Keep them off-balance with the changeup and let my defense work so I could get deep into the ballgame. I was definitely trying to keep the tempo up and keep them rushing in the box.”

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Souris Valley put the first crooked number on the board. Left-hander Nik Levensteins launched an opposite-field solo shot for the game’s first run.

The game took a bit of an unexpected turn in the bottom of the eighth. Souris Valley leadoff hitter Justin Cooper was called out after an attempt to steal second base. The aftermath of the call led to head coach Corey Thompson’s ejection.

From there, assistant coach Brock Baughcum took the reins. Baughcum was impressed with the Sabre Dogs’ resiliency through the adversity.

“I’ll tell you what — these guys are relentless,” he said. “They can play hard at any point in the game. They knew that they were going to come out on top tonight. That’s why we did.”

The Big Sticks caused some havoc in the final two innings. Gaylan Young’s two-out RBI double tied the score at 1-1.

After Badlands added two more runs in the top of the tenth, Souris Valley’s Cullen Hannigan scored on a throwing error in the bottom of that frame. Cooper added a sacrifice fly before Dinesen’s smooth single clinched the game.

“Mason Dinesen, he’s a great player,” Baughcum said. “He can do it all. He plays great defense for us and he runs bases. At the end of the day, he’s the right guy up right there in that situation. He was the guy to do it. Sure enough, he came through.”

As the Sabre Dogs celebrated on the field after the game, Dinesen stepped back and took inventory of the situation at hand.

“It feels good to win one,” he said. “I can tell you that. We played a clean game, for the most part. It’s nice to get two in a row.”

The series will continue at 2:05 p.m. this afternoon.
