Sabre Dogs eclipse .500, defeat Trappers 6-5

PIERRE, S.D. — The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs used some late-inning magic to defeat the Pierre Trappers in a 6-5 contest on Wednesday evening. Justin Cooper provided a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning for Souris Valley.

The Sabre Dogs (9-8) got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Trappers (8-12) countered with two runs apiece in the second and third innings.

Souris Valley used three runs in the sixth inning to gain the advantage. Cullen Hannigan, Tim Conway and Bo McClintock came across home plate in that frame.

Pierre’s Zane Phelps tied up the action with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, Cooper drove in Chase Alford with his decisive single in the top of the ninth. Sabre Dogs closer Aaron Kern earned the win in the bottom of the frame.

Kern allowed just two hits in his two-inning outing. Grant Smitz took the loss for Pierre.

The teams will conclude the two-game series at 7:05 p.m. this evening.
