Sabre Dogs rally late, defeat Big Sticks 7-5 for first win

DICKINSON — A night after losing on a bases-loaded walk, the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs (1-1) bounced back in their second game of the season against the Badlands Big Sticks (1-1). The Sabre Dogs earned a 7-5 victory in a game filled with twists and turns.

Souris Valley held a 2-1 lead after four innings. The action was relatively tame up until that point, but the fifth inning brought the excitement.

Mason Dinesen launched a three-run home run in the top of that frame. The Big Sticks tied the game at 5-5 with a pair of two-run singles from Conner VanCleave and Cody Maier.

Two Souris Valley runs in the top of the eighth gave the visitors the advantage. Justin Cooper started the rally with an RBI single, while Allen Grier brought home a run on a fielder’s choice.

Souris Valley starting pitcher Cam Hansen finished his day after allowing just one hit and one earned run. Henson struck out five Badlands batters.

Relief pitcher Aren Alverez struck out four of the eight Big Sticks he faced. Tanner Riley notched his first save in a Sabre Dogs uniform.

Notably, Dinesen brought home four runs during his 2-for-4 night at the plate. Cooper also finished 2-for-4.

The rubber game of the three-game series will begin at 5:35 p.m. this evening in Dickinson.
