No walk-up music and no announcers, but Jack Hoeven Park still provided two exciting games of baseball nonetheless.

The Minot High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Mandan, earning a walk-off 7-6 seven-inning victory in Game 1 and then dropped a 7-3 seven-inning decision in the nightcap.

Down to their final two outs in Game 1, the Magi stormed back to not only tie the game at 6-6 on a favorable bounce off the bat of Carson Tonini but got a bases-loaded RBI single back up the middle by Carson Gillund. That allowed the Magi to come flying out of the dugout to celebrate a dramatic come from behind walk-off win.

The seventh inning, however, went against the Magi in Game 2. Mandan scored four runs before Minot could record an out.

“Game 1 we battled back, put it into extra innings and got ourselves the win,” MHS head coach Pete Stenberg said. “And we were in this one (Game 2) all the way up to the end, so they have a never say die attitude, and they are still having fun playing the game of baseball. That was a good doubleheader.”

The Minot High School football team prepares for the upcoming 2016 season with a quarterback battle brewing for the top spot. The Magicians had to replace former All-State starting quarterback Ben Bolinske.

Senior Dylan Lautanen and junior Creighton Rudolph challenged for the starting role throughout the preseason. Rudolph eventually won out.

Behind Rudolph in the backfield, there were plenty of new faces trying to

break a few tackles and show what they had with 18 running backs listed on the roster (10 seniors and eight juniors). A majority of them shifted their focus to playing defense than getting carries.

Despite who got the touches, the offense was going nowhere without an offensive line.

“We return a lot of guys on the O-line and D-line,” Rudolph said in explaining how this team could improve on the previous season. “We like to be physical there. We pride ourselves on being tough up front, and we want to be a physical team.”

Defensively, Minot High brought back Je-Mario Jones and fellow seniors Garrett Larson, Matthew Rabe and Carter Anderson, to name a few.

Senior day for the No. 2-ranked Minot High School boys basketball team started with a scoring outburst from a healthy junior Chandler Albertson and finished with three points for senior Jack Ziegler off the bench.

The Magi only led by a point at halftime but outscored Mandan 40-26 in the second half for a 73-58 victory in the final home game of the season.

Albertson scored Minot’s first eight points in a fast-paced, energetic first half. The Magi hit six 3-pointers in the first half, including a pair on consecutive trips down the floor by sophomore Alex Schimke.

“I haven’t played in two weeks, so I was thinking I have to just come out with effort and focus,” Albertson said. “I had a back injury and my hips aren’t working right. But, I got the chiropractor to get me back in the game, so it’s good.”

Minot went on a 16-6 run in the closing minutes to capture win No. 19 on the season.

Inside the game-winning run, Peyton Lamoureux saved a ball from going out of bounds, which lead to a Justin Engg deep two-pointer. KyJuan Johnson also scored five points off a step-back 3-pointer and a fast-break layup.
