My first memory that comes to mind was during the boys basketball 2011-12 season. The date was Nov. 29, 2011, and we made the trip to Tioga. We had high hopes for our team this season but didn’t really know what to expect on the season opener, especially on the road.

Glenburn led 16-13 after one. Tioga took the lead going into halftime at 35-32. The teams battled back and forth in the third quarter. At the end of the third, it was tied 49.

That is when it got crazy.

Houston Lavachek took over the game. When I say took over, he was scoring at will. The game went into overtime, and Glenburn won 86-77.

Lavachek had 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. As I was sitting on the bench after the game putting stuff away and reflecting on our first game, my assistant coach, Clarke Stevens, threw the book at me.

I put it away in my bag, and he laughed and said, “You may want to look at it.”

I opened it up and saw Houston Lavachek finished with 50 points. I couldn’t believe it. I thought he finished with 30 or so, anything but 50. Probably one of the best offensive displays I have seen as a coach.

We got up early to travel to Bismarck on Feb. 22 for some high-quality hockey matchups. It was nice and sunny, with the temperature just perfect for hockey weather.

The energy was high with the high school West Region Tournament starting its third and final day, and Minot High needed to win against Mandan to qualify for the state tournament.

I usually try not to stress too much when I go to sporting events. But when the stakes are high like this, it’s hard not to.

Minot was losing 2-1 late in the third period, and then the magic happened. Gladly the Magi won 3-2 in a tight contest that went into overtime. We witnessed an exciting finish where it was going to be a tough out for the losers of the match.

Later that night, we were lucky enough to attend a big ACHA men’s hockey rivalry matchup between the Minot State Beavers and the University of Mary Marauders. Just like the Magi, it was the same result for the Beavers: a 3-2 winner in overtime.

Overall, we picked a good day to travel and had lots of fun, with hopes to do it again in the future.

Alex’s Tale of the Tape #1,960, Date: Sept. 14, 2019

The first two offensive plays for the Bishop Ryan football team went for touchdowns. The rout was on. The No. 3-ranked Lions rolled to a 60-0 shut out win over Tioga at Herb Parker Stadium.

Logan Merck sprinted away for the first score on a pass from Nick Sanders, and Jaxon Feller broke off a long run the second one.

Ryan took a 33-0 lead into halftime and scored two more times in the third quarter: a one-yard sneak by Sanders and a 16-yard touchdown run by Feller.

As expected, the Lions emptied out the bench for the fourth quarter. Rylan Vibeto ran in a score from 21 yards out, and sophomore lineman Jacob Fricke capped the win with a pick-six for Ryan’s ninth touchdown of the game.

“I really didn’t expect it,” Fricke said. “I just turned around, and the ball was right there.”

Throughout the first four games of the season, Ryan outscored its opponents 195-18.

The Lions ended up reaching the Dakota Bowl for the first time since 1999 at the end of the season but lost to Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich in the state championship game, 42-14.
