Devils Lake’s Grant Nelson wins Mr. Basketball title

Following a unanimous selection to the Class A All-State First Team, Devils Lake’s Grant Nelson earned the North Dakota Mr. Basketball honor on Friday. Nelson led the talented field with 88 points and 13 first-place votes.

Nelson averaged a double-double for the season, posting 24.6 points and 18.3 rebounds per game. Notably, the forward tallied 5.7 blocks per game.

Devils Lake finished 14-12 (12-8 EDC) and captured a state tournament berth.

Jamestown’s Boden Skunberg finished in second place with 70 points and seven first-place votes. Hillsboro-Central Valley’s Carson Henningsgard (36 points, three first-place votes) took third place, while Minot High’s Jaxon Gunville (five points) placed fourth.

Rounding out the voting was Richland’s Cole Myers (four points), Mandan’s Elijah Klein (two points) and Shiloh Christian’s Jaden Mitzel (two points).

Winter state cheer

competition postponed

The North Dakota Cheer Coach Association (NDCCA) State Winter competition that was scheduled for March 21, 2020, was postponed like other sporting events around the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minot High School cheer team was preparing to defend its 2019 fall championship and add to the 15 previous state titles since 2001.

Minot’s senior class includes Siane Alsadon,

Hannah Foss, Carly Johnson, Bryanne Thorson, Jaslin Short and Caitlyn Summers. This group won state titles in 2016, 2018 and 2019, along with titles in Time Out Cheer in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The MHS cheerleaders were present at 61 varsity games this season for four teams: football, hockey, boys basketball and girls basketball.
