Velva wrestling wins Region 3 Individual Tournament

TIOGA — After earning the Region 3 Dual Tournament championship, the Velva wrestling team continued their winning ways in Tioga over the weekend.

The Aggies became victorious after posting 211 points. Bishop Ryan finished in third place after tallying 153 points.

Velva’s Colin Dean captured a victory in the 106-pound weight class bout. Dean pinned Northern Lights’ Justin Hudson in 1:09.

At 132, Rugby’s Riley Odden earned a 14-4 major decision victory over Williams County’s Cristian Lagunes. Odden improved his record to 41-12.

Payton Witt brought home a victory at 138 for Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central. Witt and Stanley’s Keyton Meiers tangled in an ultimate tiebreaker, but Witt eventually won 3-2.

Stanley’s Cody Rudolph won the 145-pound bout over Des Lacs-Burlington’s Cale Ibach. Rudolph, a senior, captured a 5-1 decision victory.

The 152-pound championship match featured two familiar opponents. DLB’s Walter Winkler seized a 4-3 decision victory over Velva’s Bransyn Yanish.

Rugby’s Brady Volk and Velva’s Michael Thomas battled at 160. In the end, Volk came out on top with a 1-0 decision victory.

Velva’s Brayden Selzler helped the Aggies’ cause at 170. Selzler pinned Northern Lights’ Darrion Wilson in 4:26.

Ryan’s Corbin Okeson won by forfeit in the 182-pound championship match. DLB’s Coy Spooner also won by forfeit at 195.

Jerry Jespersen earned a win for Velva at 220. Jespersen captured a 5-2 decision victory over Stanley’s Darren Hines.

In a classic Velva-Ryan showdown, the Aggies’ Nick Hodges defeated the Lions’ Keegan Henjum at 285. Hodges won via a 9-4 decision.

The wrestling state tournament will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday morning at the Fargodome.
