Velva wrestling earns Region 3 Dual Tournament title

KENMARE — The Velva Aggies walked away victorious in this weekend’s hotly contested Region 3 Dual Tournament.

Prior to taking down Bishop Ryan in the first-place match, the Aggies defeated Stanley 48-26 and Des Lacs-Burlington 46-30. Velva earned a 54-30 victory over the Lions in the championship.

The match started with Ryan’s Octavio Alvarez winning by forfeit in the 120-pound weight class. Velva countered with six points after Gunnar Mogen pinned Gannon Ledoux in 1:28 at 126.

Next, Ryan’s Connor Harvey helped the Lions’ cause with a 3:24 pin over Triton Kaercher at 132. The back-and-forth battle continued at 138, as Lucas Seibuhr pinned Drew Zwak in 1:00.

With the score knotted at 12-12 at 145, Ryan’s Wesley Harvey pinned Velva’s Kelson Mascol in just 28 seconds. Velva’s Bransyn Yanish answered with a 54-second pin over Coy Okeson at 152.

The teams split two forfeit matches at 160 and 170. Ryan’s Jaeger Lundeen won the first forfeit, while Velva’s Braden Selzler took the second victory.

Corbin Okeson helped Ryan’s cause with a 2:17 pin of Wyatt Dove at 182. Okeson’s victory became the Lions’ last.

Wyatt Hanson (195), Jerry Jespersen (220) and Nick Hodges (285) all won by forfeit. Colin Dean cemented Velva’s victory by pinning Lane Cooper in 56 seconds at 106.

Velva’s Shayden Schiele closed out the contest with an 0:57 pin of Gattlin Ledoux at 113.

Additionally, Des Lacs-Burlington took sixth place in the tournament.

The North Dakota State Wrestling Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 at the Fargodome.
