Smooth sailing for No. 1 ORCS over No. 4 Glenburn in D12 semifinals

Holding your opponent to only two points in a quarter is a highly effective way to punch your ticket to the Region 6 Tournament.

The top-seeded Our Redeemer’s boys basketball team shut the door on No. 4 Glenburn in the third quarter to eventually coast to a 58-29 win Saturday evening in the District 12 Tournament semifinals.

“If you can do that, then you can win a lot of games,” ORCS head coach Brody Bosch said about allowing two points in the third quarter. “Especially against a team like Glenburn that has a lot of talent.”

The defensive display of dominance by the Knights (16-5) came in the wake of watching ORCS junior Levi Weekley limp off the court with an injury.

Weekley, a 6-foot-5 forward, scored six straight points in the early stages of the third quarter. His final bucket was a breakaway layup that ended with him hobbling back on defense, and then over to the medical trainers. Weekley didn’t return to the contest.

“We had to come together as a team to make sure we didn’t lose our focus, and still get the job done,” Bosch said. “They didn’t say exactly what it was. They’re still going to look at it. But (Weekley) should be OK.”

Glenburn (12-9) didn’t make a single field goal in the third quarter. The Panthers’ only two points came with 33.3 seconds left in the frame on a pair of free throws made by Blaine Stevens.

Nothing would fall, and frustrations were already pretty high. Glenburn’s go-to scorer Matthew Dufner let his emotions get the best of him when he picked up a technical foul in the second quarter.

Dufner finished with 10 points. His backcourt partner Trey Welstad had one more to end with a team-high 11 points. All of Welstad’s points came in the first half.

“Dufner is an absolute stud, and Welstad is a great player,” Bosch said. “As is Blaine Stevens and Jalyn Derr. They’re all amazing players. So, when we do something like that (limit them to two points in the third), then it really shows that defense does win games.”

ORCS was locked in early with junior guard William Sanders draining a couple of 3-pointers. Zach Hendrickson made another triple to beat the first-quarter buzzer. That gave the Knights a 17-10 lead after the first eight minutes.

By halftime, Glenburn was still in striking distance, down 28-20.

ORCS senior Landon Lang provided 13 first-half points on his way to game-high 20 points.

Weekley provided the Knights’ spark out of halftime before getting injured.

“Levi (Weekley) went down, and we got everybody in a huddle,” Lang said. “Told them to calm down, and we went over our gameplan again. Did our best to execute it.”

After the Knights broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the Panthers 14-2, the final frame was merely a formality.

“The second half was probably the best basketball we have played all year, I think,” Lang said. “We were just playing good team defense.”

Both benches got cleared out to allow some of the younger players to see some district tournament action.

Making the most of his opportunity, ORCS sophomore Rylan Vibeto sunk a 3-pointer that sent the Knights’ bench into a frenzy.

“It was for sure his first 3-pointer in a game,” Bosch said. “That was pretty cool for him to get that shot up. But, yeah, just get (the younger guys) experience because next year a lot of them are going to have to step up.”

Sanders (13 points), Hendrickson (9) and Weekley (9) provided the secondary scoring for Knights behind Lang’s 20 points.

ORCS moves on to face No. 3 Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in the District 12 championship game at 7 p.m. Monday in Minot.

Glenburn drops into a regional qualifier contest against No. 7-seeded Lewis & Clark-Berthold at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

The Bombers (12-9), who overcame a double-digit deficit in the season half, needed a desperation 3-pointer made by Walker Wold to force overtime on Saturday against No. 6-seeded Surrey (9-12) in a loser-out affair.

In the extra frame, Berthold outlasted the Mustangs 48-45 to keep its season alive.
