Magi wrestling takes third at WDA Regionals

WATFORD CITY — The Minot High School wrestling team got its first taste of postseason action on Saturday. The Magicians (16-2, 9-1 WDA) posted 198 points in the WDA Regionals tournament and took third place.

Bismarck High led the way with 286.5 points, while Bismarck Century scored 206.5 points and captured second place.

Two Minot High wrestlers earned WDA titles. Chase Burke won the 160-pound weight class championship, while Preston Jones seized the title at 220 pounds.

Burke defeated Brant Kringlie of Bismarck High in his match. The contest went to a decision, but Burke earned the 5-2 victory.

Jones also won his match via decision. After battling against Dickinson’s Malikai Rivera, Jones walked away with an 11-5 decision victory.

In addition to those champions, 13 other Magi wrestlers punched their ticket to state: Gabe Mortensen and Jacob Schulze (106), Tyler Nelson (113), Victor Garcia and Stephen Schulze (120), Paden Combs (126), Kelby Armstrong (132), Trevon McClanahan (138), Carter Peterson (152), Isaac Fernandez and Zachary Hughbanks (182), Jacob Carmichael (195) and Asher Woods (285).

The wrestling state tournament will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday morning at the Fargodome.
