Velva wrestling wins Rugby Booster Tourney

RUGBY — The Velva wrestling team only had one individual champion, Bransyn Yanish (152), but racked up plenty of points with 12 different wrestlers scoring this weekend to win the Rugby Booster Tournament.

The Aggies accumulated 215 points to beat out Bismarck St. Mary’s (190), New Salem (144), Hettinger/Scranton (131) and Bishop Ryan (125). As for the other local teams: Des Lacs-Burlington (109, seventh), Kenmare (76, 12th), hosts Rugby (55, 14th), Stanley (51, 17th) and Harvey (5, 19th).

Yanish defeated DLB’s Walter Winkler with a 4-2 OT decision to take the top spot at 152 pounds.

Alongside Yanish, four other Velva wrestlers — Michael Thomas (160), Bryce Selzler (182), Wyatt Hanson (195) and Nick Hodges (285) — reached the championship match. But, all of them had to settle for second place.

Selzler lost to Ryan’s Corbin Okeson due to an injury forfeit. DLB’s Coy Spooner kept his undefeated season going (21-0) by pinning Hanson (5:50). Hodges met his match against Ryan’s Keegan Henjum, getting pinned in 3:37.

Third-place finishes for Velva included Gunnar Mogen (126) and Jerimiah Jespersen (220).

Stanley’s Cody Rudolph took first place at 145.
