Magi swim & dive wins Coyote Invitational

WILLISTON — The Minot High School swimming and diving team continued its hot streak with another win on Saturday. The Magicians led the field with 738 points to capture a victory at the Coyote Invitational in Williston.

Dickinson finished in second place with 460 points, Williston came in third with 409 points and Legacy took a fourth-place finish with 392 points. Minot started the competition with a win and kept the momentum going.

Swim

Minot’s team of Jaxon Reinke (26.96), Zac Spaulding (30.77), Jack Wolsky (25.21), and Peyton Bartsch (23.37) earned a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The Magi finished with a total time of 1:46.31.

The Magi swept the 200-yard freestyle’s top three spots. Alexander King (1:52.19), Dominic Yoder (1:53.02) and Griffin Schaeffer (2:00.18) contributed to Minot’s stellar day.

William Walker-Rozo (2:06.85) and Spaulding (2:11.00) claimed the respective first and second places in the 200-yard individual medley. Spaulding edged out Legacy’s Shawn Holweger, who finished with a time of 2:11.83.

Reinke (23.67) earned a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Dickinson’s Mason Beck (23.15) took the victory.

Wolsky (56.79) earned a hard-fought win in the 100-yard butterfly. Williston’s Kolden Kringen (57.22) finished in second place.

No Magi swimmers finished in the 100-yard freestyle’s top three places. Minot’s Levi VonBonkern (53.33.) earned a fourth-place finish.

Minot bounced back in the 500-yard freestyle event. Walker-Rozo (5:12.42), Grant Schaeffer (5:14.82), King (5:17.39) and Reinke (5:18.88) captured the top four spots.

The Minot quartet of Yoder (23.37), Grant Schaeffer (24.25), Griffin Schaeffer (22.63), and King (23.37) won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The group combined for a final score of 1:33.62.

The 100-yard backstroke’s top six spots belonged to the Magi. Yoder (56.42), Kalen Hill (59.33), Bartsch (59.67), Wolsky (1:00.99), Spaulding (1:01.45) and Josh Boen (1:04.70) kept Minot’s streak alive.

Minot did not place in the 100-yard breaststroke’s top three spots. Gannon Cowper (1:20.42) took fourth place for the Magi.

Minot finished the invite with a flourish. Walker-Rozo (51.33), King (51.97), Grant Schaeffer (52.08) and Yoder (50.44) won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a final time of 3:25.82.

Dive

Minot’s Layton King won the 1-meter diving event. King’s final score of 386.70 edged out Dawson Wilson (378.65) of Dickinson.

Reece Pederson (316.65) earned a third-place finish for the Magi, while Harrison Shanklin (282.10) took fourth.

The Magi will take some time off before returning to the pool on Jan. 24. Minot will host Grand Forks Central and West Fargo at 4:30 p.m.
