Magi hockey falters late, loses 10-1 at Grand Forks Central

GRAND FORKS — After the first period of Saturday’s matinee, Grand Forks Central held a 1-0 lead over the Minot High School boys hockey team.

The Knights (13-3, 9-2 EDC) piled on a plethora of goals in the final two frames, defeating the Magicians (11-5, 9-1 WDA) by nine goals, 10-1. Grand Forks Central recorded 43 shots on goal, while Minot tallied just 13.

Chase Spicer started the Knights’ scoring in the first period. In the second period, Minot forward Aiden Morelli found the back of the net.

Minot senior forwards Payton Philion and Nicholas Murphy provided the assists on Morelli’s goal. The Knights posted two more goals in the second period, forcing the score to 4-1 at the end of two frames.

Grand Forks Central scored six goals in the final period. Minot junior goaltender Tre Sortland tallied 29 saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Noah Conklin added four.

The Magi will face Bottineau/Rugby (7-8, 4-5 WDA) on Tuesday. That contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Bottineau.
