Magi basketball falters in first half, loses 91-77 at Bismarck High

BISMARCK — Although Minot High junior guard Deonte’ Martinez scored a game-high 38 points against WDA rival Bismarck High, his scoring outburst came in a losing effort.

The Magicians (10-4, 9-4 WDA) trailed 53-40 at halftime in Tuesday night’s contest. Bismarck (10-3, 9-3 WDA) swept the regular-season series, finishing the game with a 91-77 win.

Minot shot 23-for-32 (72%) on 2-point attempts, but finished 6-for-18 (33%) from long distance. Martinez made 13-of-14 (93%) of his 2-pointers.

Bismarck junior forward Gunner Swanson scored a team-high 27 points. Three other Demons (Max Tschosik, Logan Schaubert and Kade Rohlfs) reached double figures.

The Magi won the battle on the boards. Although Minot finished with a 30-24 rebounding advantage, Bismarck shot 14-for-32 (44%) on 3-pointers.

Minot will have the rest of the week off before embarking on another WDA road journey.

The Magi will square off against Turtle Mountain Community High School (3-9, 3-8 WDA) at 7:30 p.m.

Back on Jan. 14, Minot earned a 90-77 victory over the Braves at home.

Majettes basketball drops 63-46 decision in Bismarck

BISMARCK — In Tuesday night’s contest against Bismarck High, the Minot High School girls basketball team scored 23 points in each half.

That offensive output was not enough, as the Demons (8-5, 7-5 WDA) earned a 63-46 victory over the Majettes (5-7, 5-7 WDA). Senior forward Allie Nelson led the Majettes with 13 points, but finished as the only Minot player in double figures.

“Not much to say tonight,” Minot head coach Jason Schwarz said. “It was rough. First time we weren’t in the game at their end. We handled their press fine, (the ball) just didn’t go in the hole tonight.”

Bismarck finished 8-for-16 (50%) from behind the arc. The Majettes shot 13-for-36 (36%) from the field and 3-of-12 (25%) from 3-point range.

“We struggled to score in all ways,” Schwarz said. “Nothing went right tonight.”

Minot will host Mandan at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Braves captured a 69-57 victory over the Majettes on Jan. 6.
