Minotauros top Bruins in shootout

AUSTIN, Minn. — Third-period drama forced the Minot Minotauros and Austin Bruins to play some additional hockey in Saturday night’s contest. The Minotauros eventually earned a 3-2 shootout victory over the Bruins, but the win did not come easily.

Austin’s Connor Mylymok found the back of the net with just over one minute remaining in the first period. With that goal, the Bruins took a 1-0 lead into the second period.

Andranik Armstrong-Kingkade scored off a Ville Immonen assist after 9:45 had elapsed in the second frame. Neither team scratched for the rest of the period.

With the score knotted at 1-1, Owen Baumgartner struck early in the third period. Immonen provided his second assist.

With one second remaining in regulation, Austin’s Ben Almquist put one between the posts. Mylymok and Dante Sheriff dished out the assists on the last-second goal.

Overtime came and went without a score. Neither Dan Russell nor Josef Mysak scratched in the shootout’s first round, but Armstrong-Kingkade came to the rescue.

The Minotauros’ leading goal-scorer came through in the clutch, scoring the shootout’s lone goal. Mylymok failed to counter with a goal of his own.

Immonen did not score, but Austin’s Ben Almquist also came up short. Minotauros goalkeeper Ben Garrity netted 31 saves in the contest.

Minot will take some time off before traveling to Bismarck for a 7:15 p.m. matchup on Dec. 27.
