Gunville breaks 3-pointer record, Magi basketball upends Legacy

BISMARCK — It didn’t take long for Jaxon Gunville to break Minot High School’s all-time 3-pointer record in Friday night’s contest against Legacy, but the Magicians still had work to do.

Gunville scored 30 points for Minot (4-1, 3-1 WDA) in its 72-61 victory over Legacy (3-2, 2-2 WDA). Minot’s senior guard hit four 3-pointers, boosting his all-time total to 150.

In the first half, the Magi struggled to keep pace with the Sabers.

“We fell behind because we didn’t rebound the way we need to,” Minot head coach Dean Winczewski said.

Two Minot seniors made key contributions later on. Senior guard Tucker Olson scored 16 points, while senior forward Derry Lentz added 11 points.

The Magi tallied 14 assists in the contest.

“In the second half, we were really good about moving the ball and getting open people shots,” Winczewski said.

Zander Albers scored a team-high 23 points for the Sabers. Sam Link and Logan Wetzel chipped in 10 points apiece.

Although Minot came out with the win, room for improvement remains.

“In a game like that, when you get a lead, you’ve got to get it going down low,” Winczewski said. “You’ve got to play inside-out.”

Minot will welcome Jamestown (5-0, 4-0 WDA) to the Magic City Campus at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28.

Majettes basketball drops hard-fought contest to Legacy, 60-48

BISMARCK — The Minot High School girls basketball team battled to a stalemate in the first half of Friday night’s contest against Legacy. At the intermission, the score read 24-24.

In the second half, the Sabers (5-0, 4-0 WDA) took over. Minot (1-3, 1-3 WDA) fell 60-48 to Legacy, marking the Majettes’ second consecutive loss.

“Tonight, Legacy outworked us on the boards and beat us to all loose balls,” Minot head coach Jason Schwarz said. “We played well enough to win, but that doesn’t work in the WDA.”

A pair of Minot senior forwards finished with double-figure scoring numbers. Allie Nelson scored a team-high 15 points, while Lauren McLean added 10 points.

However, one troubling facet proved to hurt the Majettes.

“We didn’t finish our shots when we got to the rim,” Schwarz said. “Legacy did.”

Legacy’s Arianna Berryhill scored 17 points. Mac Boone (14 points) and Alexis Dressler (11 points) also contributed for the Sabers.

Minot made four 3-pointers, while Legacy connected on six attempts from behind the arc. The Sabers shot 12-for-18 from the free-throw line, with the Majettes shooting 10-for-17.

“Our girls fought extremely hard,” Schwarz said. “Really proud of our effort. But now, we need to combine that effort with execution.”

Minot will travel to Jamestown (4-1, 3-1 WDA) for a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Dec. 28.
