MSU volleyball swept by No. 12 St. Cloud State

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot State junior libero Karli Koza with a dig Friday evening against St. Cloud State at the MSU Dome.

The Minot State volleyball team put up a fight, but No. 12-ranked St. Cloud State strolled to a 3-0 road sweep regardless by set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-14.

The Beavers (1-13, 0-5 NSIC) wouldn’t go away in the opening set. Every time the Huskies (12-1, 4-1 NSIC) tried to pull away, MSU fought back to get within a point.

Back-to-back blocks from middle hitter Emily Falldorf and setter Mackenzie Froehlich cut SCSU’s lead to 20-18. The Huskies, however, scored five out of the next seven points to close out the set.

MSU put up eight blocks in the match, led by Hayley Swain with four solo rejections.

A strong 7-3 start for the Beavers was reeled back in at 10-10 by the Huskies, and SCSU kept surging up to 13-10 before Cordova had seen enough to call a timeout.

The pause in the action wasn’t enough to slow the Huskies down on their way to a 25-18 second set victory.

The third set was last tied at 13-13 before the Huskies used a 6-0 run to take control. MSU only scored one more point, 25-14.

SMSU got stronger as the match wore on with set attack percentages steadily increasing from .119 to .209 to .241.

MSU finished with a .017 attack percentage and was led by senior Shelby Spuller with eight kills. Froehlich provided 19 assists, and libero Kari Koza had 18 digs.

The Beavers current homestand at the Minot State Dome rolls on against No. 3 nationally-ranked Minnesota Duluth at noon this afternoon.
