MSU soccer beat in Bemidji, Lewis snaps scoring drought

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The last time the Minot State women’s soccer team played a game in Bemidji, Minnesota, snow was getting shoveled off the field at halftime. Bemidji State ended up surviving the elements for a 3-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Nov. 9, 2018.

With another winter storm on the horizon this season, another battle between the Beavers broke out. Ironically, the final score turned out to be the same, 3-1, in favor of Bemidji State.

Sara Wendt scored twice for Bemidji, once in the first half and once in the second half, before both teams received penalty kicks.

Erin Becker converted from the spot a minute after Wendt scored her second goal. Then, with under five minutes remaining, Minot native Sofia Lewis stepped up for Minot State.

Lewis, who missed a penalty kick earlier this season against Montana State Billings, made this one count. After nine games without a goal or point, she notched her 29th career goal — now five goals shy of Ninfa Ramirez’s all-time school record.

Bemidji State outshot Minot State 14-4 (8-4 shots on target). Goalkeeper Emma Riedi made three saves for Bemidji State, while MSU goalkeeper Erin Rafferty made five saves.

Minot State was scheduled to play Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, but the game was postponed to Nov. 5 due to inclement weather. Now, MSU will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 18, at home against Sioux Falls.
