Majettes swim and dive handles Legacy 106-80

On a night where current and future Magicians and Majettes were recognized, the Minot High School girls and swimming diving team took care of business against Legacy.

The Majettes defeated the Sabers 106-80 on senior night. Minot High also celebrated Future Magi night during its last home meet of the season.

“I think (the girls) have been looking forward to this,” Minot head coach Emily Jensen said. “Although some of them think that it is a sad night, it is exciting for them. It is exciting for the little kids to see all the energy and time that they have put into the sport of swimming.”

Swimming

The Minot team of senior Iris Jessen, freshman Elise Altringer, sophomore Jordn Wolsky and junior Brynn Neumann earned a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The Majettes posted a time of 1:59.74 in the opening event.

Minot senior Allie Elliott (2:05.19) and sophomore Payton Luzardo (2:10.81) took respective first and second place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle.

“We’re at a higher point than we were at the beginning of the year,” Elliott said. “A lot of us have dropped a lot of time this year, which has been good to see. It’s really a team dynamic. The more you support each other as a team, the better you will do individually.”

Wolsky finished third in the 200-yard individual medley, as her time of 2:25.53 slotted her behind Legacy freshman McKayla Donat (2:22.14) and senior Becca Pennington (2:24.41).

Jessen recorded a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, as her 27.11 trailed only Legacy junior Regan Minh (26.38). Minot senior Brooklyn Filler (27.20) finished third in the event.

The four Minot seniors (Gabbie Bellew, Elliott, Filler and Jensen) were honored after the 50-yard freestyle.

“It was emotional,” Jessen said. “It was sad seeing the years fly by. Just looking at all the little faces and seeing them staring back at us. I was thinking, ‘That’s going to be them someday.'”

After the senior night ceremonies concluded, Wolsky (1:05.10) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly. Minh (1:03.91) contributed another victory for the Sabers.

The 100-yard freestyle belonged to Minot, as Jessen (58:46) and sophomore Emma Rouse (1:01.94) finished first and second, respectively. Filler (1:02.10) took third place.

Elliott (5:36.09) finished just behind Legacy freshman McKayla Donat (5:34.59) in the 500-yard freestyle. The swimmers were neck-and-neck throughout the entire race and shared a moment of congratulations after.

The Minot student section continued to encourage the athletes.

“I do really well when the crowd is behind me,” Elliott said. “I just feel like it makes me want to do better. I always want to do great, but having the student section just makes me want to push myself that much more.”

Minot’s team of Filler, Neumann and Luzardo (1:49.70) fell just short of first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Legacy group of Minh, eighth-grader Nova Beckler-Bell and Pennington (1:46.48) captured the top spot.

Pennington (1:05.35) continued her strong performance in the 100-yard backstroke, taking another first-place finish. Neumann (1:08.69) took second place.

“We’ve learned each others’ strengths and weaknesses,” Jessen said. “We know where people should be placed, and we work well as a team.”

The Majettes’ strong finish in the final two events helped seal the victory. Altringer (1:15.95) and seventh-grader Havanna Metzger (1:16.43) earned the respective first and second places in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Wolsky, Jessen, Altringer and Luzardo (3:54.86) teamed up for a narrow win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. That final victory pushed the score to 106-80.

Diving

Multiple middle schoolers were called upon to assist the Majettes on the diving board. Seventh grader Haley Conklin (195.35) took second place in the 1-meter diving event.

“We can fine-tune some of the little things that we saw tonight,” Jensen said. “Just some of the little things that we can get better at.”

The Majettes now have just over a week to prepare for the WDA meet in Bismarck.

Minot will compete against WDA foes on Nov. 9 at the BSC Aquatic & Wellness Center. The state meet will be held on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 in Bismarck as well.

“I think we will have to swim really well,” Jensen said. “There are some really strong Fargo teams from the East. Williston and Dickinson are strong teams from the West that can show up. Anything can happen. For us to be in the top four spots would be really great.”
