Muskrats baseball wins two to take Region 7 title

RAY — The Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood-Glenburn Muskrats wanted some revenge en route to a regional championship.

After losing by a run, 10-9, to No. 2-seeded Des Lacs-Burlington in a Region 7 semifinal contest on Monday, the top-seeded Muskrats put the Lakers back in their place on Tuesday in Ray to earn a spot at the state tournament next weekend in Fargo.

MLSG smacked DLB twice by 10 runs, 11-1 in Game 1 and 14-4 in Game 2, to claim the regional championship. The Lakers came in as the reigning Region 7 champions.

But, alas, the Muskrats head back to the state tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Individual stats from the Region 7 Tournament weren’t reported.

The state tournament will be held May 30 through June 1 at the Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.

VDA softball falls in West Region championship, Ryan and DLBLC advance to state

BEULAH — The Velva/Drake-Anamoose Aggies were no match for Heart River in the Class B West Region Tournament softball championship game Tuesday evening in Beulah.

Heart River rolled to a 12-1 victory and left the Aggies licking their wounds heading into the state tournament next weekend.

VDA will be making its first state tournament appearance, but does have some valuable experience on its roster with Olivia and Emma Passa. The duo helped Bishop Ryan finish third at state last season before moving schools over the summer.

Ryan will also be headed back to the Class B state tournament for a second straight season with a 11-8 win over Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood/Kenmare/Bowbells in a state qualifier game on Tuesday. The Lions have reached 11 straight NDHSAA sanctioned state tournaments after nine previous seasons of competing at state while in Class A.

The last state qualifier out of the West Region Tournament went to Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark after they took care of Washburn with ease, 10-0.

DLBLC will make its fourth straight state tournament appearance. Each season the Lakers have improved at the state tournament: Sixth place (2016), third place (2017) and second place (2018).

If that trend continues, then the Lakers would be looking at the program’s first state title.

Individual stats from the Class B West Region Tournament weren’t reported.

The Class B state tournament will be held May 30 through June 2 at Tharaldson Park in Fargo.

The first round games on May 30 will be played in this order: Central Cass versus Bishop Ryan at 11 a.m., VDA versus Hillsboro/Central Valley at 1 p.m., Heart River versus Kindred-Richland at 4 p.m. and Thompson versus DLBLC at 6 p.m.

Central Cass are the defending state champions.
