Magicians baseball splits road doubleheader against Bismarck

BISMARCK – After dropping the first game of Tuesday’s road doubleheader against Bismarck High by a score of 6-5, the Minot High School baseball team (15-10, 8-7 West Region) got the last laugh in Game 2 with a 7-2 victory over the Demons (8-17, 6-9 West Region).

The Magicians nearly completed an epic comeback in Game 1 as they trailed 6-0 heading into the sixth inning. It’s there that Minot scored a pair of runs off an error, and senior Blake Smith trimmed the deficit to 6-3 shortly afterwards with a sacrifice fly.

Still trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore Dylan Vigestad hit an RBI single to make it a 6-4 contest. Minot got one more run off an RBI groundout by junior Jack Plemel, but the Demons still held on for the 6-5 win.

The Magi’s offense stayed hot in Game 2, though, as they recorded a pair of runs in each of the first two innings en route to a convincing 7-2 win.

Five different Minot players recorded at least one RBI in the victory: Vigestad, sophomore Chase Burke, senior Kyler Stenberg, senior Brock Neshiem and junior Dylan Buchanan.

The Magi will close out their regular season at home on Friday when they face Dickinson at Corbett Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Majettes softball handles TMCHS in two-game sweep

BELCOURT – Paige Ackerman and the Minot High School softball team (14-11, 9-6 West Region) unleashed a scoring clinic on Tuesday, as they defeated Turtle Mountain Community High School (2-19, 0-16 West Region) on the road by scores of 17-1 and 13-1.

The Majettes came out swinging in Game 1, scoring eight runs in the first two innings. The scoring spree was sparked by senior Hailey Espe in the first, who hit a double off TMCHS pitcher Erin Blue Keplin to bring in a pair of runs.

Inside the circle, Ackerman kept the Braves silent with four innings of stellar pitching. The sophomore allowed just three hits and one run.

Ackerman also enforced her will at the plate. The sophomore went the distance for a three-run homer in the top of the second inning and struck again in the top of the fifth for a two-run dinger en route to the 17-1 victory.

Ackerman recorded six RBIs, three runs, two home runs and a double on 3-for-4 hitting in the winning effort. Minot then kept rolling in Game 2, as it jumped out to a 7-0 lead through four innings and easily secured the 13-1 win.

Next up for the Majettes is their final home game of the regular season on Thursday against Williston at the South Hill Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
