Magi baseball tops Braves, 9-0 and 9-3

MANDAN — The Minot High School Magicians came out swining Saturday against the Mandan Braves at Haaland Field in Mandan. The Magi (14-10, 7-7 West Region) defeated the Braves (13-11, 9-7 West Region) in the non-conference doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 9-3.

Game 1 started with a three-run first inning by the Magi. With runners on first and second, sophomore Chase Burke fired a triple to bring senior Kyler Stenberg and junior Dylan Vigestad home. In the following at bat, junior Jack Plemel followed suit with a triple of his own to send Burke home and give Minot a 3-0 lead.

The Magi added five runs in the second inning and a final run in the fifth to defeat the Braves, 9-0. Alex Schimke started on the mound for the Magi and was releived by fellow senior Brock Neshiem in the fourth inning.

In Game 2, the Magicians started slow with one run in the first inning, tacking on one in the third and one in the fourth to lead the game 3-0 over the Braves. Mandan responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run.

Plemel was able to cross home plate in the top of the fifth after hitting a double and being batted in by junior Derek Nygaard. The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to close in on the Magi, who led 4-3 going into the sixth.

Four unanswered runs in the sixth inning and a final run in the seventh for Minot sealed the game, giving the Magi a 9-3 win.

Sophomore Dylan Buchanan started on the mound and was releived in the fifth by Burke.

The Magi return to the field on Tuesday in a conference affair against Bismarck High at the Sanford Sports Complex in Bismarck.

Magi golf takes first at Turtle Mountain Invitational

DUNSEITH — The Minot High School boys golf team traveled to Dunseith Saturday for the Turtle Mountain Invitational at Garden Gate Golf Course.

Minot High took first with a total score of 316 followed by Bismarck Century (318) and Mandan (325) in the top three.

Williston’s Cole Heller finished first individually with a 69.

Gavin Argent led the Magi with a 74, followed by Otto Langhans with 78, Jack Demke with 80 and Brock Jones with 84. Ashton Heilman finished with 88, and Casey Fjeld finished with 95.

Up next, the Magi will be staying in Minot on Monday and hosting a home invite at Vardon Golf Club. The Magi will be hosting Bismarck Century, Bismarck High, St. Mary’s, Dickinson, Jamestown, Legacy, Mandan, Turtle Mountain, Watford City and Williston starting at 10 a.m.
