Steve Lipp steps down as Ryan wrestling head coach
After four reasons at the helm, Steve Lipp announced on Friday that he is stepping down from the head coaching position with the Bishop Ryan wrestling team.
Lipp, who is also the advancement director for the school, cites work responsibilities as the reason for his decision. The former head coach will stay on the staff, however, as an assistant coach.
“My duties are getting busier and busier, so it was just time,” Lipp said. “It’s just going to be a lot easier for me (as an assistant head coach) to concentrate on the things that I need to do with the school…I think it’s what’s best for everyone.”
The decision comes a month after the end of the Lions’ season, where the team reached the state dual tournament for the fourth straight time under Lipp. The four-year coach posted a 64-10 dual record during his time with the team.
In addition to success in duals, the 2017 Region 3 Coach of the Year produced three state champions and 20 individual state place-winners.
The Lions have already filled the opening internally, as former assistant coach Brock Nagel has been named the new head coach.
Nagel, who was also an assistant head coach at Kindred High School and Dickinson High School for a total of five years, is now the head coach for the first time in his career.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Nagel said. “It’s super nice because (the team) already has a feel for me and I already have a feel for them. (Lipp) has already told me that, any questions I have, he’ll be right by my side.”
