Velva wrestling edges Ryan for Region 3 title

RUGBY — After losing to Bishop Ryan in the Region 3 Dual Tournament final last weekend, the Velva wrestling team outlasted the Lions in the Region 3 Individual Tournament on Saturday.

The Aggies (196.5 points) bested Ryan (178), Northern Lights (157), Stanley (138.5) and Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark-Berthold (125.5) to round out the top five.

Velva advanced 11 wrestlers through to the state tournament, with nine of those wrestlers making a final on Saturday. Gunnar Mogen (113) and Brayden Selzler (160) won individual titles for the Aggies.

Seven schools came away with individual titles. Ryan had the most with four: Conner Harvey (106), Kaleb Beeter (152), Cody Luck (170) and Corbin Okeson (182).

Coming away with two individual titles were hosts Rugby (Riley Zachmeier at 138 and Ridley Odden at 120) and Stanley (Cody Rudolph at 145 and Noah Swegarden at 220).

DLBLC’s Coy Spooner remained undefeated on the season (40-0) with a championship at 195.

The Class A and Class B state wrestling tournament will be held next weekend at the Fargodome.
