Magi swimming and diving takes first at Coyote Invitational

WILLISTON — Dominating the top five in almost every single event, the Minot High School swimming and diving Magicians took first at the Coyote Invitational Saturday at the Williston Area Rec Center.

Minot took first with a total score of 738 followed by Jamestown (415), Bismarck Legacy (354), Williston (354) and Dickinson (290).

To begin the day, the Magi 200-yard medley relay dropped almost two second off their seeded time for a final time of 1:43.50 to take first. In the relay were Kalen Hill at backstroke, Griffin Schaeffer at breaststroke, Jack Wolsky at butterfly and Zac Spaulding at freestyle.

Taking the top three in the 200 freestyle for the Magi were Alexander King (1:56.23), Peyton Huss (1:57.38) and Grant Schaeffer (1:58.41).

William Walker-Rozo, Wolsky and Levi VonBokern took the top three in the 200 individual medley for the Magi. Novak and Spaulding took first and second in the 59 freestyle.

In the 100 freestyle, Spaulding took first followed by fellow Magi Huss and Novak.

Walker-Rozo won his second individual event of the day in the 500 freestyle followed in second and third by Alexander King and Grant Schaeffer.

Minot’s 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays took first. Dominic Yoder took first in the 100 backstroke while Griffin Schaeffer took first in the 100 breaststroke.

The Magicians return to the Williston Area Rec Center at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, for a dual with Williston.

Magi wrestling with five placewinners at Bismarck Rotary

BISMARCK — The Minot High School wrestling team ended up with five placewinners and an 11th overall team finish after the two-day Bismarck Rotary tournament this weekend.

Sidney (Montana) topped the hometown Bismarck High Demons by a point, 213 to 212, to win the tournament. The Magicians finished with 91.5 points.

Two Minot High wrestlers reached the championship matches of their respected weight classes: Kelby Armstrong (113 pounds) and Trevon McClanahan (145). Both, however, lost in the final.

Armstrong was defeated by undefeated Cael Larson (28-0) from Rapid City Central (South Dakota) in a close 8-6 decision. McClanahan lost a 6-2 decision against Christian Dean from Sidney.

Also placing for the Magi in the tournament were Davian Rios (sixth at 113), Jacob Carmichael (sixth at 182) and Jorge Talamantes (sixth at 195).

Minot High will be back in Bismarck on Friday for a WDA dual against Bismarck High, starting at 7 p.m.
