Patriots claim state championship, Minot High takes second

Justin Martinez/MDN Bismarck Century poses with its state championship plaque after topping the competition Tuesday at Jamestown Country Club.

JAMESTOWN – After a two-day marathon at Jamestown Country Club, the Majettes crossed the finish line only to see another team was already on the other side.

History eluded Minot High’s girls golf team on Tuesday. The Majettes entered the day with hopes of claiming their first Class A state championship since 2009, but Minot High (679) settled for second place as it watched the Patriots (661) hoist the championship plaque.

Despite missing out on the title, Minot High head coach Scott Foltz refused to let his team hang its head.

“I was really proud of our resilience today,” Foltz said. “I really think our girls came to play, and any time you finish in second place is still a success.”

Century’s Hannah Herbel finished in first place individually with a two-day score of 154 (+10). Junior Becca Tschetter, who entered Tuesday in a three-way tie for first place with Herbel and West Fargo Sheyenne’s Maggie Manson, took third place with a score of 161 (+17).

Justin Martinez/MDN Becca Tschetter shoots from the bunker on the fifth hole Tuesday during Day 2 of the girls golf Class A State Tournament at Jamestown Country Club.

Tschetter had her eye on her own piece of history Tuesday. The junior stepped onto the course with hopes of becoming the first Majette to win the individual state title since Jaime Fundingsland won back-to-back years in 1994-1995.

The junior kept pace through the first four holes, trailing Herbel by just one stroke for the lead. Then the fifth hole came along.

Tschetter made a crucial error as she approached the green, hooking her shot to the left and watching as it crashed into the bunker. It took another three strokes for the junior to finally get her ball in the hole, but the damage was already done.

Tschetter posted a triple bogey, giving Herbel a three-stroke edge. The Patriots’ star golfer never looked back as she cruised to the individual state title.

“I had a few holes that got away from me,” Tschetter said. “I thought my chipping was pretty solid, but I just couldn’t finish with a lot of my putts. Those hurt me, and that was hard to come back from.”

One player that excelled for the Majettes on Tuesday was Jaci Jones. The junior shot an 80 (+8) on the day, earning her fifth place individually for the tournament.

Bella Dobrinski also hit her stride on Day 2. After shooting a dismal 97 (+25) on Monday, the sophomore salvaged her tournament by shooting an 81 (+9) on Tuesday. The strong outing marked a season-best score for Dobrinski, and it elevated her to a 15th-place finish.

Also in the Majettes’ rotation were sophomores Savanah Brintnell (+51) and Sydney Berg (+51).

On a day with plenty of ups and downs, the most emotional moment came at the end of Joelle Fettig’s run. The senior chipped in her final putt as a Majette on the 18th hole and was met by an applause from the crowd as she hugged her teammates with tears in her eyes.

Fettig, who’d been playing golf for Minot High since she was in the seventh grade, ended the two-day tournament with a combined score of 175 (+31) and a share of 12th place.

“I wanted to have fun and enjoy it because it was my last run,” Fettig said. “We have a great connection with this team, and I’m glad I’ve gotten to be a part of it.”

As a team, Minot High emerged from the state tournament better than when it entered it. The Majettes held their own against the best competition around, and with most of the group returning next season, they’ll be chasing that state title once again.

“We’re excited for next season,” Tschetter said. “We’re going to work really hard to hopefully get back here next year. This just motivates us even more.”
