Magi tennis loses a nail biter to Legacy, 5-4

The Minot High School boys tennis team fell heartbreakingly-short of a win on the road against Legacy Monday, losing to the Sabers, 5-4.

The Magicians got off to a sluggish start in singles play, losing four of the six matches to give Legacy a commanding 4-2 lead. Freshman Eric Wentz and junior Jack Wolsky kept the Magi alive, each winning their singles matches and teaming up for a doubles win against Legacy’s Paxton Miller and Jay Moylan in two sets (6-4, 7-5).

“Eric Wentz and Jack Wolsky both had nice days going 2-0 and continue their strong play for us in the middle of the lineup,” MHS head coach Scott Delorme said. “They also paired together to get a solid two-set win.”

Freshman Zach Diehl and senior Rory Taney also delivered in their first time as a duo all season, defeating Legacy’s Parker Krom and Corby Svihovec in a three-set thriller (3-6, 6-4, 10-3) to tie the score at four.

But the Magi couldn’t complete the comeback, as Legacy’s Michael James and Sean Joyce secured the Sabers’ match win with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over the senior duo of Mason Diehl and Peyton Huss.

“We lost a tough 5-4 match on the road at Legacy tonight,” Delorme said. “We were able to win two out of three doubles matches, but just started slow in singles and couldn’t overcome that.”

The Magi now shift their focus to Thursday’s matchup against Jamestown at Hammond Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
