Magnusson, defending champions PRFL cruise past DLB baseball in the first round

Alex Eisen/MDN Park River/Fordville/Lankin senior pitcher Thomas Magnusson throws a pitch in the Class B State Baseball Tournament against Des Lacs-Burlington Thursday at the Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown.

JAMESTOWN — The defending Class B baseball champions, the Park River/Fordville/Lankin Aggies, made quick work of Des Lacs-Burlington, the Region 7 champions, Thursday in the first round of the state tournament.

In a contest that last exactly one hour, PRFL senior pitcher Thomas Magnusson dominated with a two-hitter in a 10-0 (five-inning) win for the No. 2-seeded Aggies at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown.

“My fastball (was working), and I just had to trust my stuff,” said Magnusson, who struck out 10 of the 18 batters he faced. “This is the most important game, we think. We just got to carry this momentum into tomorrow and, hopefully, into the next day too.”

DLB had a chance to take the opening lead, but senior starting pitcher John Koronka was thrown at home in the top of the first inning.

“Maybe,” DLB coach BJ Karhoff said when asked if that changed the momentum of the game right from the start. “But, we weren’t hitting very well. John (Koronka) was missing spots up there and they don’t miss a thing.”

The Aggies jumped on the Lakers’ missed opportunity in the bottom half by scoring four runs off an RBI sacrifice fly, an RBI fielder’s choice and a two-run blast over the fence in right field by Charles Thompson.

“Any balls that we missed our location on, they hit it,” Karhoff said. “They hit hard and they hit it far. Props to them.”

A six-run fourth inning pushed the Aggies to the 10-run lead needed to force the five-inning mercy.

In that spurt, Jacob Erovick had an RBI double, Adam Zavalney provided a two-run single up the middle and Nick Thompson hit a two-run double off the top of the hedge fence in right field.

“They were the better baseball team today,” Karhoff said. “We had a couple of miscues in the field and that kind of propelled them to this situation. That’s on us.”

The Lakers two hits came from Arron Grandy and Dante Gunville. Koronka was given the loss on the hill.

DLB had two errors behind Koronka and a couple more defensive lapses that resulted in hits for the Aggies.

“We got to make plays on defense,” Karhoff said. “These teams are here to hit. That’s how it’s going to be. If we are going to have a chance in any game, then we got to make plays.”

The Lakers drop to the consolation side of the bracket and will face Enderlin/Maple Valley this afternoon at 11:30 a.m. PRFL moves on to face No. 3-seeded Carrington in the Class B state semifinals.
