Tougher than dirt

Beeter, Caudle claim five-day tour titles at Nodak

The dirt was flying and drivers were dueling.

Championship night of the Tougher than Dirt Tour (TTDT) took center stage at Nodak Speedway Sunday as the IMCA Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks battled it out for a mid-season title.

The TTDT featured five races in five days with stops at the McLean County Speedway in Underwood (Wednesday), the Southwest Speedway in Dickinson (Thursday), the Williston Basin Speedway in Williston (Friday), the Estevan Motor Speedway in Saskatchewan (Saturday) and the Nodak Speedway in Minot (Sunday).

Coming into the fifth and final night of racing, the points lead in each class was a slim three points.

Rocky Caudle, from Iowa, held that advantage over Minot native Robby Rosselli in the Sport Mods, and Minot native Brock Beeter held the same margin in the Hobby Stocks over Duane Wahrman from Kansas.

Beeter won the third heat race for the Hobby Stocks and started the main feature second.

With 16 laps remaining, Wahrman was issued the yellow flag for causing a crash and had to go to the back of the pack — basically sealing Beeter’s TTDT title.

Yet, for good measure, Beeter placed fourth with Minot’s Andrew Bertsch (who started 24th) taking the victory ahead of Jason Ruby and Adam Goff.

In the Sport Mods, Rosselli started on the pole after winning the first heat race earlier in the day. Rocky Caudle started eighth.

So, Rosselli started the race as the provisional winner of the TTDT championship, but he couldn’t hang onto it. He slipped from first and finished fifth, while Caudle moved up from eighth to fourth to win the event.

Erik Laudenschlager, Chase Conway and Chad Strachen filled the podium for the main event.

The IMCA Modifieds, Sport Compacts and Stock Cars also raced on Sunday for the weekly points competition held at Nodak Speedway.

In the 26-car Stock Cars main feature, Heat 1 winner Joe Flory started on the pole but gave up the lead two laps in to his son Dalton Flory. The Williston duo drove away from the field until a caution came out with 12 laps to go.

That opened the door for a second-place brawl, in which Joe Flory somehow managed to hold off Eric Harpole, Rob Stenvold and Nathan Burke.

Dalton Flory took the checkered flag and got his first win of the season at Nodak Speedway.

The usual top-flight Modifieds maneuvered through a few crashes early on to thin out the 25-car field.

When the dust settled, Tom Berry Jr. from Oregon was a class above the rest. He was on pace to win the race by at least half lap if it wasn’t for more cautions.

It didn’t matter how many times Berry Jr. was brought back to the pack, he was too fast to be denied the feature win. Minot’s Robert Hellebust took second and Williston’s Travis Hagen slotted into third.

Lastly, the Sport Compacts main feature was won by Max’s Christopher Zenz.

Racing resumes at Nodak Speedway tonight at 6 p.m. for a special night of racing on Memorial Day.
