Minot State baseball drops doubleheader with SCSU

St. Cloud, Minn. – Sophomore Trevaun Smith belted three home runs and led Minot State with six hits, as the Beavers dropped two games (9-8, 8-3) in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn. on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beavers drop to 23-14 on the season and 21-6 in NSIC play while the Huskies improve to 25-12 and 18-7 in the NSIC.

Game One

Smith led off the first game with his third home run of the season to give Minot State a quick 1-0 advantage. Michael Borst followed with a double and scored on an RBI double from Celestino Rodriguez to double the Beaver lead to 2-0.

The lead didn’t last long, as the Huskies tied the game at two in the bottom half of the first inning with two runs on five hits.

The Beaver re-gained the lead in the second when Smith opened the inning with a double down the left field line before scoring on an RBI single from Borst.

The Minot State offense stayed hot, as the Beavers erupted for four runs on three hits and one SCSU error in the top of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Kyle Williamson opened the scoring with a two RBI single, scoring Geordie McDougall and Darrel Doll.

Smith followed with his third consecutive hit of the game and second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot over the fence in left field.

Wyatt Schlosser led off the fifth inning with a double before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Doll, extending the Beaver lead to 8-2.

SCSU responded with two runs on three hits to cut the Minot State to 8-4. In the sixth inning, the Huskies tied the game with a four-run rally off three hits and two Minot State errors to tie the game at eight.

The Huskies clinched the victory in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single bases loaded single through the left side to take game one, 9-8.

Smith led the Beavers at the plate while going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and a team-high three RBIs. Borst notched three hits while four other Beavers recorded a hit and Williamson posted two RBIs.

Starter Justin Demary lasted 5.1 innings while surrendering seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits and striking out six batters.

Tannar Galey pitched one inning of relief, giving up two runs and striking out a batter.

Jack Gamba dropped to 1-1 on the season while surrendering the walk-off single.

Game Two

Smith led off the second game like he did the first game, this time a solo shot to left center to give the Beavers a quick 1-0 lead.

SCSU responded with four runs of their own in the first to take a 4-1 advantage before adding a run in the second inning.

The Huskies added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take an 8-1 lead over the Beavers.

Borst reached base on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning before scoring on a two-run home run to center field by Rodriguez to trim the deficit at 8-3.

The Beavers couldn’t add any more runs, as the Huskies clinched the sweep over the Beavers with an 8-3 win.

Smith led Minot State in the second game, batting 3-for-3 at the plate with a solo home run. Doll and Demary registered two hits apiece while Rodriguez recorded one hit.

Starter Andres Hackman suffered the loss on the mound. Hackman fell to 4-5 while tossing fiving innings and giving up five runs on six hits and striking out three Huskies.

Brock Breshears pitched one inning in relief before Wyatt Moore threw the final two innings for Minot State.

The Beavers return to action this weekend, as Minot State hosts Upper Iowa in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
