MHS tennis earns 7-2 win over St. Mary’s

The Minot High girls tennis team won its outdoor season opener in convincing fashion Monday, defeating St. Mary’s 7-2.

“We finally got to play some outdoor tennis today and were able to start our conference season out with a big victory over St. Mary’s,” MHS coach Scott DeLorme said. “As we would expect early in the year and basically the first time we’ve really hit outside, we saw a lot of good things and more importantly, a lot of things we can continue to work on.”

MHS won five of its six singles matches.

“Haya Dodin and Raquel Egge set the tone at numbers 1 and 2 singles with straight set wins for our first two points,” DeLorme said. “Both of those girls are extremely talented and we have high expectations for them at the top of our lineup. Raquel was the No. 1 seed in last years regional tournament and this year is playing No. 2 for our team, so it shows the quality of kids and players we currently have in our program.”

Alyssa Henson had a straight set win at No. 4 singles and Gwen Mathews and Eden Olson picked up wins at No. 5 and 6 singles.

“We think our depth will be a major asset for us all season as we have so many girls we can rely on and that includes the top half of our JV,” DeLorme said. “Eden, only an eighth grader, got her first varsity action in a conference match and despite a slow start, got stronger as the match went on and eventually won 6-4, 6-0.”

The Majettes won their No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to round out the victory.

“Our one and two doubles teams of Askvig/Dodin and Egge/Henson played exceptionally well both winning in straight sets to finish the dual 7-2,” DeLorme said. “These two teams along with our team of Mathews/Fettig have a chance to give us three very solid doubles teams all year.”

MHS (5-0, 1-0 WDA) is back in action at 4:15 p.m. today at Hammond Park against Bismarck Legacy.
