Knights extend region volleyball set winning streak to 30, beat TGU 3-0

Garrick Hodge/MDN ORCS sophomore middle hitter Annie Folden (12) goes for a kill during a high school girls volleyball Monday in Minot.

Not many things are guaranteed in life, but counting on the Our Redeemer’s volleyball team to roll through the Region 6 tournament continues to be a surefire bet.

After sweeping their way through the District 12 tournament, the Knights continued their postseason dominance with a 3-0 sweep of Towner-Granville-Upham in the opening round of the Region 6 volleyball tournament Monday at the Minot Municipal Auditorium. Set scores were 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11.

With the sweep, the Knights have now won 30 straight sets in region tournaments dating back to 2014.

“Our team is always focused all throughout the entire season,” ORCS coach Kara Nunziato said. “They’ve worked all season long to be the best they could be entering postseason play, it was really a goal of ours. The girls have been playing consistently well in all of their positions on the court.”

Ryleigh Popinga led ORCS with 15 kills, while Karolynn Winger chipped in three aces and nine kills. Eden Olson had 17 assists and Karlee Zablotney chipped in 16 assists, respectively. Tessa Olson had a team-high 10 digs and Annie Folden and Makiah Frederick each recorded a block for the Knights.

Garrick Hodge/MDN ORCS outside hitter Karolynn Winger (3) records a kill Monday.

For TGU, Jaidyn Brummond and Melanie Anderson each had four kills, while Grace Bachmeier recorded six assists and Brummond and Joslyn Wells each had a service ace. Brummond had a team-high two blocks and Melanie Anderson and Allison Cross each chipped in 10 digs.

ORCS faces Lewis & Clark at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Region 6 semifinals at the Minot Municipal Auditorium.

“When it comes to playing, every team wants to extend their season as far as possible, but this team is really focusing on each game, each set and each point,” Nunziato said. “We’re not looking at it in such a huge chunk but we’re looking at it one step at a time.”
