Beavers Drop 3-1 Decision vs. No. 21 Wayne State

The Minot State volleyball team fell 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25) to No. 21 Wayne State on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Beavers to 3-14 (0-9 NSIC) on the season while the Wildcats improve to 12-6 (6-3 NSIC).

Hayley Swain led the balanced attack from Minot State with a team-high 17 kills and three blocks. Shelby Spuller and Emily Falldorf followed Swain with 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

Kelsey Dewulf dished out a match-high 56 assists while Karli Koza posted a career-high 36 digs.

Inside Set 1

The Beavers and Wildcats traded points back and forth to a 15-15 tie before the Wildcats ended with a 10-3 run to win the first set, 25-18. Swain paced the Beavers with seven kills in the set while Minot State hit .263 as a team.

Inside Set 2

Minot State raced out to a quick 4-0 lead off three kills from Brileigh Boyce and one kill from Jeanne Brenner. Wayne State climbed back to tie the set at 10 off an attack error from Spuller. Tied at 23-23, the Beavers finished with back-to-back points off a Swain kill and Wildcat attack error to win the second set, 25-23. Swain led Minot State with seven kills, followed by five kills from Falldorf and Brenner.

Inside Set 3

Wayne State led 3-2 and never looked back, winning the third set 25-23. Down their biggest margin of the set, 20-15, the Beavers cut the deficit to 24-23 before the Wildcats clinched the third set off a kill from Jaci Brahmer. Spuller recorded six kills while Boyce added five kills. As a team, Minot State hit .289 in the set.

Inside Set 4

The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 start before the Beavers fought back with a 5-0 rally off a kill from Falldorf and Brenner and three WSC attack errors to cut the deficit to 6-5. That was as close as the Beavers got, as the Wildcats finished the set on a 19-10 run to win the match, 3-1. The Beavers were led in the fourth set by Swain and Spuller with three kills apiece.

Minot State returns to action next Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to face Dickinson State.
