Magi whip Mandan in region rematch

MANDAN – Minot High’s wrestling team picked up a 42-23 dual victory over West Region foe Mandan on Thursday night.

Magi hockey secures another lopsided region result

WILLISTON – The Minot High boys hockey team didn’t start well this season, but with another one-sided victory on Saturday, the Magicians are suddenly on fire.

Now the winner of two straight and six of its last seven, Minot toppled Williston 5-0, already the sixth time the Magi (7-4-1) have exceeded five goals in a single game this season. The Coyotes (3-7-1) sit last in the region standings with just one win from seven conference games.

Minot’s offensive production was well spread throughout Saturday’s win, and senior forward Matt Flom was the hat trick hero.

After senior Brent Williams opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the first period – Williams’ eighth goal of the season – Flom made it 2-0 for the Magicians at 9:39 of the second period, assisted by junior Logan Bischof.

In the third, Flom fired in Minot’s third just 22 seconds into the stanza, helped by junior Ethan Czaplewski and sophomore Easton Bennett. Czaplewski poked in his fifth goal of the season roughly eight minutes later at 8:14 to make it 4-0.

Just under a minute later, Flom completed his hat trick – the first for Minot High this season – to further extend his team lead in goals (11).

All-state senior goaltender Brey Effertz – winner of his last five starts – was infrequently tested against the Coyotes. He made 15 saves to improve his record to 6-2-1.

The Magicians travel to Jamestown for another region game Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Predators top Wild 3-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Calle Jarnkrok scored a tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the Nashville Predators beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 on Saturday.

Mike Fisher and Colin Wilson also scored for Nashville, which improved to 9-1-2 in its past 12 games and has a league-best 60 points. Pekka Rinne made 36 saves.

Charlie Coyle scored for Minnesota, which has lost 10 of 12 and began a three-games-in-four-days stretch that includes games in Chicago on Sunday and Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Wilson and Chancellor leads Seattle past Carolina 31-17

SEATTLE (AP) – This time Russell Wilson did it with his arm, passing the Seattle Seahawks into the NFC championship game for the second straight year with a big assist from Kam Chancellor.

The Seahawks are one step closer to defending their Super Bowl title.

Wilson threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, Chancellor returned an interception 90 yards for a TD midway through the fourth quarter and the Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 31-17 on Saturday night in an NFC divisional playoff game.

Wilson was nearly flawless in one of the best playoff performances of his young career. He took shots downfield and was hard to stop on third downs.

Wilson threw a 16-yard touchdown to Doug Baldwin in the first quarter, found Jermaine Kearse for a 63-yard TD in the second quarter and capped his night with a 25-yard strike to Luke Willson with 10:26 remaining that gave Seattle a 24-10 lead.

But the capper was still to come, from the most impressive athlete on the field.

Chancellor had wowed everyone by twice jumping over the Carolina offensive line on a pair of Graham Gano field goal attempts at the end of the first half. And he showed that he’s a pretty good safety in coverage, too.

With Carolina driving and trying to cut Seattle’s 14-point lead in half, Chancellor anticipated Newton’s throw. He jumped in front of Ed Dickson and returned his third career postseason interception for a touchdown.

It was the longest touchdown in Seattle’s postseason history, topping Percy Harvin’s 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in last season’s Super Bowl.

State reaches settlement in insuranace case

BISMARCK – The North Dakota Insurance Department has reached a $4.7 million multi-state life insurance agreement with Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America and Allianz Life Insurance Company of New York regarding their use of the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File.

The agreement was the result of a coordinated multi-state examination among state insurance departments in North Dakota, California, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. North Dakota was the principal lead state in the examination and is expected to receive almost $90,000.

Life insurers have used the Death Master File for many years to search for and stop payments to annuity holders, but have not always used the database to identify deceased life insurance policyholders to pay beneficiaries. Under the terms of the settlement, Allianz will implement a number of business reforms to promptly identify when a policyholder has died and will use the file on a uniform and timely basis to search for deceased policyholders and make payments to their beneficiaries.

The department has been part of 16 multi-state settlements with insurance companies regarding life insurance practices and to date has received more than $2.2 million. Consumers with questions about the settlement are encouraged to call the department at 1-800-247-0560.

Tauros avenge loss with 5-0 thumping of Aberdeen

Friday’s loss to Aberdeen at Maysa Arena left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Minot Minotauros, losing in a shootout despite doubling the Wings’ shot total.

Minot found its revenge on Saturday.

Boosted by four goals in the second period, the Tauros took the rematch over Aberdeen 5-0, the seventh time they’ve scored as many goals in a single game this season. They did so just once last year.

Still comfortably atop the Central Division, the Tauros have won six of their last seven division games. With Austin’s 3-1 loss at Brookings on Saturday, Minot now leads the Bruins by four points with a game still in hand.

Team points leader Blake Lizotte opened the scoring for Minot just under five minutes into the second period on Saturday, his 10th goal of the season. Then at 8:30 of the same stanza, James Mathias punched in a power play goal to make it 2-0.

Max Mettler buried Minot’s third just over four minutes later, his second of the year. Colton Kramer then made it four for the Tauros at 16:34, helped by newly acquired defenseman Martin Aune.

Johnny Walker iced it at 3:32 of the third with his team-leading 14th goal of the year.

Minot goaltender Tanner Holmes improved his record to 6-1 with a 20-save effort, his second win of the season over Aberdeen.
