After dropping their second game of the season to Ray/Powers Lake in 2021, the Surrey Mustangs rallied as a team to go on a six-game win streak, propelling themselves to a region title and a playoff spot.

Although their season would come to an end with a loss to Cavalier in the playoffs, the Mustangs had a lot to be proud of and momentum building up heading into this year.

“Our goal this year is to repeat as region champions and make a deep playoff run. Outside of football, we hope to learn to be accountable, disciplined, committed, resilient, and family oriented,” head coach Connor Hill tells The Minot Daily News.

Even with the success of last year, the Mustangs will be going through some changes in 2022. Hill plans on installing a new offense for his team to learn, while still focusing on building off what they were able to accomplish last season.

In addition to the new offense, Hill shares that he believes the team will be strong on both sides of the ball. “I think we expect to be a team that is fast and can score a lot of points. We’ll be physical on the inside and fast on the outside both offensively and defensively,” he said.

The Mustangs will have some familiar faces returning to the squad this year who Hill believes will be of vital importance to their success in 2022. Second team All-State defensive lineman, Ayden Amundson, is among those returners looking to put together another strong season.

In addition to Amundson, starting quarterback Rylan Scheig will be back for his third season under center, and Will Webb, Jesse Dalby and Dalton Walker are all expected to contribute with significant playing time once again.

With camp already underway and regular season play set to start soon, Hill shares that there isn’t one game that they are looking forward to most this year and that his team is excited for every game on their schedule.

The Surrey Mustangs began their regular season and quest for consecutive region titles on Aug. 19 against TGU Titans.
