When I was young, our school in Minot had a drill. We would crouch down under our desks and put our hands above our heads to practice how to survive in case of a nuclear attack. It was called "duck and cover."
It was the height of the Cold War and we were preparing against the possibility of the Soviet Union launching nuclear missiles at us. North Dakota was Ground Zero because we had bombers and fighters - as well as a couple hundred nuclear-tipped missiles located in bunkers under our topsoil. That meant the Russians would hit us first.
It has been 65 years since we practiced that drill, and almost 40 years since the Berlin Wall fell. Yet I'm starting to think Russia won.
It appears Russia figured out that flipping a President was a much better way than blowing each other to bits. I don't know if it was billions of dollars backing our current President and his family for decades, videos or photos used as kompromat, or just the fact our President clearly favors dictatorships over democracy.
Whatever it was, it has worked. Our country just removed critical communications support to Ukraine just as Russia launched an attack. Before that, Russia somehow convinced our President to help them access billions of dollars by lifting sanctions against their country. Russia will use that money to kill Ukrainians and help Iran attack American troops.
How did it come to telling the children of Ukraine they have to "duck and cover" because an American president is supporting the enemy?
