PETA sign not appropriate for public place in Minot
Patricia Marquard, Minot
There are many reasons why the PETA sign (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) should not be placed in a public area in Minot. First of all the statement, “Get Over (That Meat Addiction)! is a false statement. It categorizes meat, a source of protein and essential vitamins with nicotine alcohol, drugs and other addictive substances. Most doctors would agree that eating meat is not a disease and hence not an addiction.
Secondly, PETA is an out of state private enterprise that harasses farmers, cattle ranchers, property owners, hunters, and would like to put an end to all of these industries. In a state that has a Cowboy Hall of Fame, Rodeo, and the Cattle Industry, and Agriculture, as chief sources of income along with the oil industry, it is not wise to put public messages up that are contrary to our statewide culture. Another reason is that tourism benefits from hunters coming to North Dakota.
There is nothing wrong with being vegan, but people have a right not to be vegan. When a city puts up ads in a public place it means that the city has the position that is on the sign. It means that the Minot government backs a false statement and backs the position that we should get rid of meat (and milk.) If the Minot city budget does not include finances to repair the bridge, they could have omitted the purchase of city signs with directions to business and shopping areas. It is not hard to find your way around Minot.
