Why voting matters in mayoral election

Miranda Schuler, Minot

When most people think of elections, their minds jump to Washington, D.C. But the truth is, some of the most critical decisions that shape our lives happen right here at home.

On Tuesday, August 5th, Minot voters will choose the city’s next mayor in a special election. And while it may not come with the glitz of a national race, this election will have a direct impact on our everyday lives — from how we address public safety and flood protection to the way we invest in local businesses, neighborhoods, and quality of life here in Minot.

Yet historically, local elections often see the lowest turnout. That’s not because Minot doesn’t care — we do. We show up for our neighbors in times of need. We pack the stands at the local high schools and Minot State games. We support local causes, lend a hand at community events, and rally around one another in true North Dakota fashion.

You don’t have to be an expert on every issue or have attended every forum, but take the time to learn who’s running and what they stand for. These are your neighbors, and you’re likely to run into them at the grocery store, church, or local sporting event.

As Theodore Roosevelt — who found both hardship and inspiration in North Dakota — once said, “The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his weight.” Voting is one simple, powerful way to do just that.

This election isn’t about politics; it’s about people and the pride we feel about the place we all call home. Most importantly, it’s about making sure that Minot’s future reflects the voices of its citizens.

So, on August 5th, show up. Not out of obligation, but because Minot’s future should reflect the people who live here, work here, raise families here, and want the best for it.This city belongs to all of us. Let’s treat it that way.

Starting at $2.99/week.
