Thoughts on human relations committee debate

James Maxson, Minot

According to a UCLA study, 3.5% of Americans are gay or bisexual and 0.3% of Americans are transgender. Whether or not UCLA factored in those persons who remain in the closet is an unknown. Whether or not this study is spot on, dead wrong or merely an estimate is above my pay grade.

Presently the Minot City Council is “studying” the issue of changes, if any, to a Human Relations Committee. I was watching the Twins getting crushed by the Red Sox the evening of the last city council meeting thus missing what councilman Pitner described as a “gong show.”

Obviously the polar opposite factions aren’t lacking zeal. Whether the opponents of change have a correct interpretation of Scripture or are merely fearful and angry is also above my pay grade.

That said, if I remember what I have read correctly, when the world’s most influential Jew, a man in deep need of a haircut who wore an ankle length gown and sandals, once saved the life of a woman whose sex habits were out of conformance with the norm. In her defense he said,” Let those among you who are without sin cast the first stone.” He also said on another occasion, “As you have treated the least of my brothers so have you treated me.” Would he be unelectable today?
