Falsehood to preach that love is sin

Elia Jay Scott, Fargo

This letter is in response to the letter published in the Minot Daily News Feb. 25, “Politics used to promote false gospel.”

In Matthew 5 and Mark 7, Jesus of Nazareth teaches us that sin is not committed merely with the hands, but with the heart.

Tell us, then, those who condemn gay people: What is the difference between the love of a gay man for his husband, and the love of a straight man for his wife, in their respective hearts? Or do you believe your own love is inherently different and superior to the love of a gay couple? If you examine your own heart, you will find only prejudice, a violation of God’s Law of Love, could lead you to that conclusion. That is why all people of conscience, listening to the Spirit of Love in their hearts, are rightly repulsed. It is the SAME LOVE, in the heart of the lover. You preach a falsehood, if you preach that love is sin.

In defense of their position, the author of the Feb. 25 piece cites Scripture.

Firstly, they use mistranslated Scripture. The verse of Paul they say condemns homosexuals in fact condemns pagan temple prostitutes. The word ars”nokoitai was not translated “homosexuals” in any English version of the Bible published prior to 1940.

But secondly, I will say only this: the conservative Christians who supported slavery also alleged the Bible supported their position. They could pick out any number of verses which seemed to condone bondage of their fellow man. They – like some today – did not listen to the Spirit of Love in their hearts. That is where they erred – and where some today err. And that is why they lost, as the hate of today – which some self-righteously call “Christian love,” though it is clear to all looking and listening that it manifestly is not – will lose.

Love will always win in the end.
