Oil tax cuts vs. veterans’ license fees

Austin Gillette, Garrison

ND Legislature considers tax breaks for oil companies. ND produces over 1 million barrels per day. Reducing the cap level means less revenue for the State. We should be aware of the record profits had last year nationwide, over $200 hundred billion. The Legacy Fund is over $8 billion. But we must look beyond and realize this oil boom is a 1 time harvest. I’m in favor of leaving the trigger levels intact.

Which brings me to a veteran’s license plate issue. 2018 I requested and was issued a veteran plate with a Marine Corps logo plus an assigned number from NDDOT. I reviewed my renewal and found I was paying fees for specialized plate $25 and another $10 fee. I paid for the specialized plate in 2018. I agree that paying the tag fee is appropriate.

What is really troubling is that “Gold Star Families” also pay lesser fees. The least the State of ND can do is issue them at no cost as their veterans gave their lives serving and protecting us. If there are any veterans or concerned citizens reading this, contact your Representatives to make appropriate changes in the current law.

Starting at $3.75/week.
