Eating Disorder Awareness Week promotes change
Kristina Hokenson, Minot
Eating Disorder Awareness Week is Monday, February 27th, to Sunday, March 5th. This is an annual campaign started by the national eating disorder association (NEDA). The purpose is to “educate the public about the realities of eating disorders and to provide hope, support, and visibility to individuals and families affected by eating disorders.”
The theme this year is “It’s Time for Change.” The awareness colors of green and blue will be lighting up many landmarks across the United States, including the Alerus Center in Grand Forks!
According to statistics on the NEDA website, 28.8 million Americans experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives. Many disciplines aid in the treatment of eating disorders including mental health professionals, medical professionals, registered dietitians, and occupational and physical therapists. Family, friends, and community members such as coaches and teachers also provide excellent support.
Working as registered dietitian over the years has made me passionate about helping to heal eating disorders. My private practice, Haven of Health, has requested to become an eating disorder awareness week collaborator. If your organization is interested in participating, please visit the website.
