Senators on wrong side of history

M L Berg, Minot

During the recent confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Jackson, both our US Senators chose not to vote in her favor. She is an African-American with an unblemished record, and the first African-American woman named to the Supreme Court.

Despite her stellar record, our Senators chose not to support her. However, they did support a white male nominee a few years ago, who had a highly blemished record (Kavanaugh, in 2018).

Not supporting Judge Jackson, places them on the wrong side of history. They were also on the wrong side of history, when they both voted not to impeach the ex-president during his first impeachment trial (December, 2019, to February, 2020).

If the Senate had impeached him then – as the US House of Representatives did – the country would have been spared the violence and the chaos that occurred on January 6, 2021. Those who voted not to impeach the man must bear some of the blame for this, which is a direct consequence of their inaction.

All of these Senators have put themselves on the wrong of history.

The ex-president was at the center of all of this. In a way, he could even be described as a man with an ‘unconstitutional’ constitution, even though he had taken an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Ideally, both the letter of the law and the spirit of the law should be followed.

So, both of our Senators went 0 for 2 on these two momentous occasions. A ‘dream team,’ they’re not.
